Travel Tips
I have the book Making Out in Korean. Yes, it has a lot phrases that you would not find in any other Korean language books. However, bear in mind that that book does not really teach you now to have a conversation at all. Also, you might want to think twice about using some of the phrases. You might offend some Korean people and it by no means will allow you to "hook-up" with a Korean if that is a object in mind.

As for travelling alone, Korea is quite safe and easy to get around. Seoul's public transportation system is excellent and quite cheap. Everything is announced and written in both Korean and English so you know where to get off at. Also, if you ever get lost, just look for the nearest subway stop. That's what I did when I first got here.

You can also hang out in the Itaewon. It is good for partying, but packed with foreigners. However, I am not a big fan of Itaewon, mainly because it is dirty and the Korean people can be quite rude. My suggestion is if you want to party to head off Itaewon and go to Hongdae/Sinchon instead. Way better atmosphere in my opinion.

If you are looking for a cultural experience then you probably won't find it in Seoul. You must also consider that Seoul is a metropolis and it's cultural roots have basically been tripped away. However, you can check out some old palaces, but please keep in mind that they are closed on Tuesdays.

If you are looking for a place to stay, go checkout the Windflower guesthouse. It's small and a bit dirty, but has an excellent array of guests that provides a great social atmosphere for new travellers to Seoul. If guest houses aren't your thing, you can stay a goshiwan, which is a very tiny room, with just the basics or you can crash at a jjimjilbang, which is a Korean sauna and is dirt cheap.

See if you can grab a book called "Making out in Korean". I lived there when I was in the army and people told me it was pretty much the used everyday language. Costs are not unlike that of a major city in the US. get a map of the subway and make sure you get a good hotel. the only one i stayed at was the Dragon Hill Lodge on the American post in Yongsan right next to Etaewon. $1.00 is about ~WON1,350 (wahn). make sure you get a heads up on demonstrations becuase the might get crazy at times. it's really a beautiful and safe place though.... have a good trip!
email me and i'll give you more links and such.
when are you going?

Get to know the subway system! They're the cheapest mode of transportation. You could take buses too. They both have day passes you can buy.
The subway system is totally easy if you have a map of it... also when you get here call... 021330. It is a local number, so I cant help on how to call in advance... but it is awesome. It is an ENGLISH SEOUL TOURISM LINE!!! Not only can you call them and let them tell a taxi driver where to go, they will tell you anything and everything on where to go and what to do. AND THEY TRANSLATE!!! The cost is not too bad, especially if you take advantage of the public transportation... HAVE FUN... email me at jessferg@yahoo.com if you have any more questions... i live really close to seoul!!!
best tip i have is dont go alone.
