Do the bride's parents pay for weddings in Korea like in America?

Travel Tips
I was married in Korea. This is how it works.

Yes, the families exchange gifts. Yes that causes anxiety, but that is not the source of the wedding costs.

Both sides invite lots and lots of people. In Korea, they don't give gifts, they give money. All of our guests brought the equivalent of between $50 and $500.

Then we used the money to pay off the wedding. The rest of the money went to the parents so they could pay off the costs of the gifts they paid each other.

Lastly, her parents gave us $20,000 towards a house.

I am sure that not everyone is the same, but pretty much every wedding in Korea at least shares the practice of offering cash gifts rather than presents. Source(s): Married in Korea. ^^ Been to hundreds of Korean weddings.
Other Travel Tips
I thas been my experience here that both famillies contribute equal amounts of money, but in their own way:
For example, the bride's parents are expected to give the groom's parent gifts. (and not something from JcPenney)
The groom's parents, in return, are expected to purchase the couple's first dwelling. (an apartment, if you are in a big city)
There have been instances where the wedding is called off because one set of parents were insulted by hte size of the gift or apartment.
How much to spend causes great anxiety in the Korean culture. And rest assured that people remember how much you gave to their child when they were married. Wedding guests are expected to reciprocate.
For the actual wedding cost?
I have seen it both ways: one family paying and also both families sharing costs.
In America, in recent decade, most families share costs these days.. or the wealthier family picks up a larger chunk of hte bill.
At least, in my experience.
Weddings in Korea are similiar to weddings held throughout Asia. During the courting period and when a wedding date has been set usually the grooms family will visit and discuss wedding plans with the brides family. At this time monetary gifts in huge sums are exchanged, along with food and ceremonial acts. The grooms family more often than not pays for the wedding.
