Why are Korean movies so voilent?

Travel Tips
I'll agree with others who said that Korean movies aren't particularly violent. But there has been a surge (in the past several years) of movies revolving around gang life and such, which, by nature, would be more violent than other genres.

But, as someone above said, the dominating genre remains the sappy drama / tear-jerker style of movies . . . a lot of them would be considered cheesy or corny over here by most Americans (just my opinion).

But some really good Korean movies are:
Old Boy (of course),
Friend,
Fighter in the Wind,
Bad Man

and, of course, these recommendations are coming from a guy, so . . .

I think it's cultural opression being leaked by way of uncensored media. Movies!!!! Gets all the anger and frustration out!
Psychology
I wouldn't say they are any more violent than American movies.
The majority of KOrean films never get outside of Korea, so it is hard judgement to make unless you live here.

South Koreans do have a much more recent history of violent protest. Things have been quiet for a few years, but we are not that far off from major rioting. Just this winter, a man set himself on fire over the FTA talks. South Koreans are known to be the "Italians of Asia", meaning they are very passionate and expressive, particularly in anger.
It just only means that Koreans are great movie writers............Especially horror movies...........
I think they are about the same as Hollywood ones.
In some exceptions, they are very violent (eg. "Old Boy").

But there are some very good movies too.
However, my impression is that Koreans like
to make tear-jerkers and those become very
popular.
not all korean movies are violent.
