Why Aren't Korean ATM Machines Open 24 Hours? |
Travel Info This truly baffles me. Also, it sucks if you want to get some money after midnight. Travel Tips Security and safety of customers. In Korea the ATMs are patrolled at night by mobile civilian security companies hired by the banks. Basically, they drive from site to site and make sure the doors are locked and that everything looks OK inside. Most of these ATMs are in locations that, while busy in the day and early evening, become quite deserted later at night. Customer safety is a real concern at those sites. A few ATMs, while the front door is locked, have a guard inside who will unlock the door for customers but most of those do not go beyond 1 or 2 a.m. Some of the 4 and 5 star hotels do have 24 hour ATMs in their lobby. A hotel desk clerk or concierge is always a good source of information - ask them about 24 hour ATMs. I suggest that you get a couple or more 100,000 won checks and tuck them away in your wallet for late night emergency's - many of us Koreans do that. Source(s): Born, raised, educated and still living in Seoul. Other Travel Tips I think the ATMs in the Korean American banks are open 24hrs.. I guess the case might be different in Korea because of security reasons.. do you necessarily & constantly need money after midnight? if not, then I guess it's really unecessary for them to be open 24hrs anyway. [; It is the same thing in Japan too. If you wanna have a late night, plan ahead. They don't all close at midnight. A lot of times I end up hitting the atm's in Mini-stop or Family-Mart at 1 in the morning. It sucks getting hit with the surcharges, but sometimes you have to do it. It's totally a safety issue. |
