Why do young korean students study till past midnight? |
Travel Info I work part time as an online english instructor for koreans. I noticed that they study too hard. I think Koreans put a lot of emphasis to studying. How can the young people enjoy their youth? Travel Tips High school is a rough time for kids in Korea. It's all study study study. A big factor is because it will determine which university they will be allowed to attend. Each year, a day is set aside, usually in October, where every senior high school writes an exam that rates which level of university they will allowed to attend. I am not sure if you are aware of it, but Korean universities follow a pyramid of rankings, Seoul National University is ranked number one and the rest follow from there. Also, public universities are equally priced. If students tank this test it means they will instantly rejected from certain universities based on their score. Where as in North America your transcripts play the biggest part of being accepted into universities. So parents make their students study super hard because they want their kid to attend the best university possible. One reason why is because children are expected to take care of their parents when they are unable to work anymore. University students study a lot too, but near as much as high school students. At times I feel sorry for them because all they do is study. However, as we all know, when university comes around there is a lot less studying and a lot more drinking with Korean students. Others It's a cultural thing......same in Japan. Schooling is VERY important and getting good marks in school will affect their future employment. They study late because need to get good grades. Self - ESL teacher It's not only Korean students. Many other students from other countries do also. Especially in my school. We're a "distinguished" school (Part of the Top 100 High Schools in the U.S. in TIME magazine and in CA) and put a lot more emphasis on academics. Or maybe it's because (Korean) schools put more emphasis on education. Because they are far more concerned with leading a responible and productive adult life rather than our spoiled youngsters who ................................. Need I say more? Trust me, they are enjoying their teen years by the standards they maintain, maybe we could learn a lot from them? if your speaking about this happening in america, then yes, asian students are like the new generation of jews. they come from countries that are not as superficial as america and value education more. they know they have to use their brains and they understand what a work ethic is. in some cases they will shame their families if they do not do well, and they want to do well. its because they have too many students trying to get into good schools. so they have to work hard to get the scores they need. all asian countries are like that. |
