What can you tell me about Kim Ok Kyun? |
Travel Info My husband is named after him. Many people seem to recognise the name but I wondered what people thougt about him. I don't want what I can look up online, I want to know what you already knew about him, or even if you've never heard of him. Thanks! Travel Tips Umm, wasn't he a Korean freedom fighter who was assassinated? Others Kim Okgyun (旯€鞓リ窢) was a politician during the late Joseon Dynasty. Whether he was a Patriot or a Traitor to Korea depends on which version of the story you hear. Some believe that his backstabbing of the Korean government eventually led to the Russo-Japanese War and the occupation and colonization of the Korean peninsula. Some feel like his efforts were a valiant attempt to contain Japanese imperialism. His goal was to open Korea to the west, especially to European countries, to make Korea a power in East Asia. His betrayal of Korean government led to his exile to Japan (played off as a diplomatic mission in the wikipedia article I've cited), where he assumed the name of Itawa Sujaku. He was eventually assasinated on a cruise from Japan to Shanghai, and it is not known whether his assassins were Chinese or Korean. Naturally, the Chinese say they were Korean and the Koreans say they were Chinese. The account of his life has been heavily revised in Korean textbooks many times. Most modern textbooks make him out to be a hero, rather than a traitor. I've linked below a pretty slanted entry from wikipedia on him, but it captures some of the political tensions of the times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/kim_okgyun... |
