Why don't many rock bands come to Korea? |
Travel Info Lots of big name rock bands go to Japan on a regular basis. Seoul is a big city, but doesn't get many rock concerts. Why don't more bands play here? Do Koreans like rock music? Travel Tips I don't know about recently, but I know of a few bands that have played in Korea. I know Metallica comes once in awhile...I know Oasis is pretty popular there as well and I think they had a concert last year. Franz Ferdinand is also popular but I don't believe they've ever played a show. Also, a British rock band called Placebo which I've never heard of came for the Incheon Festival. (I don't know if you're talking about hard rock or not...I just included some who were somewhat in the genre^^) I agree though, they don't come that often. But being that Tokyo is a much larger city (and more well known to be a major stop for touring artists), I'm not surprised. Tokyo has a much bigger audience and stadium. They probably go to the Tokyo Dome... whereas Korea, although there are some rock fans, they're probably not as prevalent as Japan. I just found out that at the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival 2007, there are gonna be The Chemical Brothers and OK GO. Ok, they're not really hard rock but still somewhat in that genre...^^ Others THEY'LL COME! U'VE GOTTA INVITE THEM AND PAY THE PRICE!!! IT is changing slowly.. actually, it has changed a lot since I have been here. But my experience teaching Korean children, from elementary school through high school, etlls me that htey would not be fighting over the tickets. Major bands in America could not fill as many seats/nights in Seoul and so, it would not be worth their trip over. Example; while teaching english last spring, I would ask hte kids to write down their favorite singers, colors, bands, foods, etc. and they would always ask me to answer the same. Nearly every band or singer I liked was unheard of to them. Iliked Green Day, Gwen Stefani, etc. If you mention really najor ones, in Seoul, like Justin Timberlake or Eminem, then the older kids know them. But if you travel only 50 minutes outside of Seoul, Timberlake was a mystery.Korea does have it's own, large batch of "K-Pop" stars, which they assume is sweeping the world.. (the Korean "wave") And they were VERY surprised to hear that I had heard of NONE of them. "Rain" is about the only one to make it the states.. and even he is a very small fish. (who just canceled all of his dates in the US because the authorities deemed his South Korean sound equipment in violation of California code) I lived in Seoul 10 years. Saw ozzie and Santana. You'll here more rock in Karaoke than the Radio although there are some die hard rock fans. Techno Pop seems to be the craze these days. Metallica went, actually, so did Sonata Arctica... There are different types of rock lovers in Japan and Korea. I never found a Japanese to come with me to Metallica , or Hammerfal. or Rhapsody live. And I don't really love Green day rock style, though such type of , let's say "light rock" is very popular in Japan. Maybe, they bands you prefer play the type of rock Japanese prefer more, while the bands which come to Korea are little bit heavier, but it is not that big rock bands don't come to Korea at all. Korea has their own "big name" bands e.g dongbangshingi, super junior, SS501, shinhwa if they already have their own kpop bands then why get bands from America come in?? Their not even as popular over there as it is in Australia and America... |
