Travel Info Have any native koreans acted odd around u because u are a foreigner? Travel Tips There are times Koreans have acted strange around me because I am a foreigner. I know sometimes they like to talk behind my back - to my face on the subway. I do get stared at times, which I usually reply back with a friendly wave. Sometimes I get a random drunk Korean who wants to chit chat with me. Although they are usually quite nice, combination of kimchi and soju on their breath is gross. Even tonight I had a strange encounter. I was walking to the store and this one Korean dude was looking out his window watching me closely. I know this because I was the only one on the street. However, what I found really strange was when he called his buddy over to join him. They started talking to each other, and although, I didn't understand every word they were saying, I think it wasn't something negative. I think they didn't know a foreigner lived so close to them and got kind of interested. Hmm, I am not sure if I should take the incident as form of flattery or mochary Others YES ! I AM AN AMERICAN AND WHEN I WAS FIRST AROUND KOREAN PEOPLE THEY USED TO MAKE ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE . KNOW I SPEAK KOREAN , COOK KOREAN , WRITE KOREAN , AND JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE . I EVEN OWN A HANBOK FOR MOON FESTIVALS AND NEW YEARS . EVER SINCE I UNDERSTOOD THEIR CULTURE I HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED FAMILY . [ I GUESS I SHOULD BE SINCE I AM ENGAGED TO A KOREAN . ] as long as u looks like asian. u wont have tat trouble. Well, when I visited Seoul with my parents, who had not visited for more than twenty years, there was an extreme difference between them and people in Seoul. Especially my mother, she didn't like their attitude whenever we went to restaurants, so it was a hassle. It doesn't matter whether you're a foreign race, you can be fully Korean, but if you're different in some way, you will of course get odd behavior. No! I doubt they even noticed I'm around... Honestly, I haven't had too many issues while visiting Korea a few weeks ago. I mean they know I'm not Korean by the way I look. A homeless person approached me on the train asking for money. I think he went directy to me because because I wasn't Korean. I went to a temple where and they where a lot of little kids that were on a field trip and they were joking around and asked me where I was from. I get the occasional stare like what are you doing here. All in all they treated me well, but I was always with my friend and his family. Korea is a really nice place I can't wait to go back. Just came back from vacation in S. Korea |
