Foreign teachers in S. Korea sign contracts that read like indentureships than negotiable contracts. Why?

Travel Info
I found that any contract that I'm offered is very one sided. In fact, I feel more like I'm simply a commodity that has no bargaining power.

Travel Tips
By avobe person's note it is 1 side of coin's story. some ppl hate to be in Korea and sick of Korean managers or boss or even western colligues(many of them are so busy for parting almost every night)...etc etc.

Oviously Korea is forigne country for western ppl.
Story from english teachers are all individually different.
So, make your own story in Korea after you get nice contract.

There is a lot of bad quality's contract out there I guess.
Why don't you keep looking better one?

Or go to Korea and find a job in real place not through the Internet. that will be more easier. and then you can even negotiation with them before you signe.

Well... I hope it is helpful idea.

Good luck.

And dear avobe there Treehugger326.
I wonder. To be in Korea was soooo miserable as you said. How do you guaranty Japan is better place for you??

Really wonder.....

Because that is ALL that you are as far as most companies are concerned. Universities and high schools would probably treat you better than hagwan management. Hagwan managers care only about the $$ you bring in. They don't give a damn if you're happy, if the students are happy, if the students learn, etc.

I just got back from Seoul and I did manage to save $15,000 USD but I was miserable while I was there. my company tried to extort little bits of money every check for this or that, they didn't follow their own policies and prcedures, the culture is stifling and anri-progressive, the weather sucks, etc. You can read eslcafe.com (search for English Channel if you want to hear about my lousy school) for more horror stories and advice.

You'd be better off to go to Japan where foreigners, especially Americans, aren't loathed and despised and businesspeople actually honor agreements.
