Travel Tips check the blacklist....English recruiters here change there name daily...get a solid contract with written salary guarantee, and paid round-trip airfare....non negotiable...also they should provide housing.....if they are not too concerned with your degree....then be very careful...the govt is cracking down very hard on illegal teachers...be aware that you need to make sure you are dealing with a reputable firm....If they get busted....it will count against you. It's hit or miss. have a look at http://www.worknplay.co.kr/ or http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/... and try to get yourself a job directly with your school and cut out the recruiter entirely. It's easier than you think. For a person coming to Korea for the first time with no teaching or travel experience, going through a recruiter is probably a good plan. That said, always remember that the recruiter is working FOR THE SCHOOL AND NOT FOR YOU!!!! Never EVER sign with a recruiter who will pay for your flight without the correct (E-2) visa, even if they tell you that "everyone does it." Yeah, and a lot of people who do it get deported, or get themselves in bad situations. To prepare yourself for Korea, read all of the Job discussion forum and FAQ "stickys" on http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/... Also, read a lot about teaching ESL to kids (probably the first job you'll have). Regarding eslcafe, there are a LOT of people who post negative things there, and, while some bad things happen to people, most of the people came here unprepared for the cultural differences. Probably 80% of the people who come here have a positive experience. That said, you can read all you want, but the reality is a lot different than what you might expect. Korea may LOOK a lot like the west, but Korean minds are firmly in the east!!! I'll just agree with the others. Recruiters have no real purpose when you can get a job directly with a school. They have no power to change anything once you get there and most of them just want the commision they get. Just go to Dave's ESL Cafe and look. Or you could look at Sisa or Pagoda. Those are big schools and wouldn't be too likely to mess you around much. I didn't come to Korea through Footprints, but I know someone, a co-worker, who did and they really liked them. This particular person got in a little bit of a situation here and consulted Footprints over it and found them really helpful. When I was first looking into coming here, I checked out the Footprints website and it looked like a really solid company. Based on that and my co-worker's experience, I would say they are a good company. However, what everyone else says is also correct. Research the school as much as you can before you agree to anything. |
