I assume you mean South Korea because the north has a very strict Stalinist economy based upon heavy industry and mining.

South Korea is a modern giant in electronics (Samsung, for example), authomobiles (Hyundae and Daewoo), engineering (Daewoo and many others), shipbuilding (Hyundae), chemicals, and is rapidly developing in pharmaceuticals.

Many of the South Korean industrial companies are what are known as "chebul" - an interlocking conglomerate of many diverse companies, sometimes with overlapping boards of directors and family relationships.

The strongest segments of the South Korean economy are shipbuilding (the largest in the world), automobiles, textiles, and electronics (especially computer chips).
