I need two historical sites located in South Korea.? |
Travel Info I really need specific details on it. I need two historical sites. I need description of what happened there in the past and when. Also, I need to know what you will see there today. Thanks in advance. Travel Tips You might be interested in Kang Wha, a little-known (to foreigners) location, not far from Seoul, where there was an Yi dynasty fort in the 1870s. It was attacked by the U.S. - the battle lasted only a short time due to the superior firepower of the U.S. naval vessel, the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, over the small-bore cannon of the Koreans. This was the first battle between the U.S. and Korea, but really did not have much effect other than to wake the Koreans up to the need for opening to the world (which they did in the 1880s). There are still the remains of the fort there, along with historic markers and photographs from the era. Seoul itself is not an old city. It was the location of a small village, called Han Yang, until the first Yi king decided to move his capital there, renaming it "Seoul", which only means "capital". This was in the late 1400s, so nothing in Seoul (Changduk Palace, etc.) is more than 600 years old. For history, I suggest you also look at Kwangju, which has ancient royal burial mounds, an early astronomy structure, etc. Others google it Seoul and Taegue Unite Nations Cemetary in Busan and Cheju Island |
