My choice is the Rio

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I am staying at Harrah's this weekend and was at Balley's in December. However there is not much for young children to do at either one of these. Harrah's has a little more going on. Balley's has more of a Old Las Vegas too it. But it connected to Paris which is very nice.
Between those two, I'd go with Ballys. They are both very similar properties as far as quality, amenities and service. Ballys is known for having the biggest "standard" rooms on the Strip, at 450+ square feet. ("Standard" as in not a suite.)

I also think Ballys is a tiny bit better as far as location, although these two properties are actually quite close to one another. Ballys is just that much closer to Bellagio, and Bellagio is my fave Vegas hotel to visit =). The internal connection from Ballys to Paris is also handy... I recommend the Paris buffet... those decadent French desserts, yum!

Here are the official hotel websites so you can see which shows, restaurants, etc are at each property:

Harrahs:

Ballys:

I also recommend reading the reviews of both hotels on this website to help you decide. They don't sell anything, so they give fair, unbiased (and often funny!) reviews of Vegas hotels:

And here is a map of the Strip, so you can see which other properties are in walking distance to each property. For perspective, it is about 5 miles from Mandalay Bay on the South end to Stratosphere on the north end. FYI, Aladdin is now Planet Hollywood, Stardust is now just dust (recently imploded), and Barbary Coast has been renamed Bill's Gambling Hall... but other than that, this map is current:

Have fun and play safe!
I work in the Las Vegas travel industry.
I have stayed at both places....harrahs twice and ballys twice, ,personally i prefer ballys it is a much nicer hotel
and the casino seemed nicer, in other words I had much better luck there. will be going out again in august, and this time will be staying at flamingo, mainly for the pool and both rooms were comped . also the pool at ballys is much nicer that harrahs. you can't go wrong with either place though.
good luck

No doubt you will prefer Bally's over Harrah's if for nothing else than the room size. The Harrah's room is a little on the small side while Bally's has one of the larger standard rooms on the strip. Bally's is as a whole also is a little nicer to stay in as well. Its got a better pool, restaurants and casino. It attached directly to Paris which is also a plus. Both have decent locations with a slight nod to Harrahs in that respect.

I have pictures of both rooms on my site at...

Have a great trip!
