Is there any tourist spot between Las Vegas and Grand Canyon, AZ? |
Travel Info Is there any nice place to see between Las Vegas and Grand Canyon, AZ besides Hoover Dam? How long people normally stay at Grand Canyon? Thanks! Travel Tips It depends on which part of the Grand Canyon you are going to. If you are talking about the area on the Hualapai Indian Reservation called Grand Canyon West (where the glass SkyWalk is located), than there is not much of anything along the way beside Hoover Dam. Note that in my opinion (and many others) the SkyWalk is over-hyped and over-priced ($75 per person plus tax). If you are talking about the South Rim in the National Park (the most famous and most popular part of the canyon), than there are a number of interesting spots along the way: Chloride, Arizona - Funky old historic gold mining town with many interesting buildings and artists. North of Kingman along AZ93. Old Route 66 - The longest intact stretch of old Route 66 runs from Kingman to Seligman. It is very popular with Route 66 buffs and is a much more scenic and interesting drive than I-40. You can stop at the historic Grand Canyon Caverns along the way. SnowTop Cafe, Seligman - This is a classic old fashion soda shop that has become an icon on Route 66 (the owner is a famous Route 66 historian and promoter). The place has funny decorations and is known for its off-beat sense of humor. Flagstaff, AZ - If you take a slight detour through Flagstaff (rather than heading straight for the canyon from Williams), there are a number of attractions including historic Lowell Observatory (where Pluto was discovered in 1930), the excellent Museum of Northern Arizona and a historic downtown area with many neat shops and cafes. Lastly, if you are talking about going to the North Rim of the park (which is only open mid-May to mid-October), you can stop by the excellent Zion National Park along the way. As for time at each spot... a basic tour of Grand Canyon West (including the SkyWalk) would probably take 3-4 hours (much of it spent standing in line). To really see the main sights and attractions at the South Rim could be done in a really packed day, but better over two days. The less developed North Rim could be enjoyed in an afternoon (although the cool quiet and solitude there makes it a nice place to just hang out for a day or two). Source(s): Arizona resident, roamer of backroads, and frequent Grand Canyon visitor. Have been to all of the above mentioned places. Other Travel Tips kingman Arizona is the only place btn the two.. of any note but it is not a tourist attraction. there are a couple of small "highway towns" at the major road crossings. They are good for petrified wood, Indian jewelry, and geodes. I have been a couple of times and if you are not taking a raft or hiking tour two days is plenty to "see" it.. If you want to travel around it and see the north rim Or if you are there, the south rim that is another day.. The rest is just how long do you want to hang out and soak in the atmosphere. The north rim is more removed and rustic and has less people as it is more difficult to get to. Their is an incredible place to visit near the Hover Dam. You have to buy a permit for $13 and rent a kayak for about $55. You can rent the equipment at a hotel casino called the Hacienda. You kayak down the Colorado in a place called the Black Canyon, it is totally pristine wilderness with big horn sheep and natural hot springs, water falls and caves. The whole thing is only about 45 min from down town Vegas on the way to the grand canyon. Check it out you wont be disappointed. The water is calm and you can camp overnight at a place called Arizona hot springs and a van will pick you up the next day at Willow beach. The Hacienda hotel also has cheap rooms and helicopter rides for under $50. sedona. its like the grand canyon... only. less grand |
