Vegas Hotel?? What Should I Do?

Travel Info
Has anyone ever stayed at the Southpoint in Las Vegas? If so, how was it, and was it an inconvenience since it's on the very end of the strip.

My husband and I are going on a free trip, and that is the hotel we are staying at. I'm wondering if we should go ahead and pay for our own hotel room right on the strip, or take the free room and stay at the far end of the strip.

Insight please? What would you do?

Also, I like to gamble if that would play a part in the decision. I have only been to Vegas once, and that was on business so I didn't get to see too much. My husband has never been.

Travel Tips
I have stayed there twice this year and it is my new favorite casino in Vegas. While it is great for me, there are some pros and cons that might be important to other people.

Pros...
Brand new place so everything is still new.
Nice big rooms with plasma TVs and Ipod hook ups.
Great casino with plenty of good games.
Good comps.
Good drink service.
Easy freeway access and its the first place you hit into town.
Nice collection of restaurants from quick to gourmet.
Bowling and Movie Theater.
Nice pool area.
Shuttle to the Strip and Airport.

Cons...
Is far from the strip - 7 miles to Mandalay Bay.
Geared towards locals and So Cal visitors.
Not a lot around it - Closest other casino is 3 or 4 miles away.
No ultra lounges or trendy places(Can be a pro!)

If you have a car, it is a great place to stay. If not or if its your first trip to Vegas, not so much.

I have some room pics on my site includung the best room I have ever had in Vegas at...

Others
Take the free room but rent a cheap car. Rentals in vegas are super cheap (less than $40 including insurance a day) and parking is plentiful and free on the strip. It will be cheaper than getting a hotel room further up. In addition, since the hotel is on the south end of the strip, it's likely brand new and relatively nice.
Many visits as my family lives there.
I never been to that hotel, but I would suggest staying right on the strip. Otherwise, you'd have to walk far just to see all the casinos in that heat.
I suggest the Monte Carlo..I had alot of luck there on the machines, and its kind of in the middle of the hotels and less crowded. Or if you want to go to clubs, the MGM has alot of popular ones.
It is a great hotel, wonderful spa, etc. But you are far from everything. You will need to rent a car to get to any of the other casinos/strip, etc. because you are south of the aiport. If you will not have a car, get a different hotel. If you do just plan to get stuck in the typical strip traffic every night.
If it were a 100% free paid trip, I would stay here! There are plenty of ways to get around Vegas.

This hotel offers a FREE SHUTTLE from the airport to your hotel AND from your hotel to Mandalay Bay! When you get to Mandalay Bay, you can take the free Tram to Excalibur and you're on the strip.
Here's the shuttle schedule:
Shuttle to 鈥淭he Strip鈥?(Mandalay Bay Resort)
9:00AM to 12:30AM Continuously
(time is subject to traffic conditions).
The last bus will leave South Point Hotel at midnight and will leave Mandalay Bay Resort at 12:30AM.

Rental cars are also a good option, if you leave early enough you can avoid most of the strip traffic and just about all the hotels have valet parking (free).

The hotel is clean and recently renovated, so as far as quality you can't go wrong (especially for free). I would definitely do it.
I have stayed at the Southpoint and really liked it. It was not convenient to the main part of the Strip so I strongly recommend getting a rental car which would be much less expensive then getting another hotel room (parking is free and easy in Vegas). The rooms are great - large and pretty luxurious. The casino itself looked nice but we only played a couple of slots there.
