not surprised Google wouldn't want to get too close to Limerick, they'd probably steal the satellite.

If you mean quite a bit east of Limerick - as in the orangey-red coloured pieces in the centre of the country, they are peat bogs.

Presumably the Google satellite coloured them differently to distinguish them from mountains.

Peat is used as a fuel in Ireland, where it is known as turf.
Those red areas are the peat bogs. They harvest them commercially. I've driven past them and it's a great site.
They are probably the 257 acres of red mud hills of a by-product when alumina (fine white granular powder) is extracted from bauxite ore (coarse red earth) at The Aughinish Alumina plant, the largest of its kind in Europe, which is situated on the Shannon Estuary.
