Paddy's Wigwam. Is this racist? |
Travel Info Here in Liverpool the Catholic cathedral is affectionately known as 'Paddy's Wigwam' on account that it is shaped like a wigwam and it was build by Irish labourers. Is this racist? If it is, could you suggest another nickname that still implies the debt of gratitude that people here in Liverpool owe to those who built it? Travel Tips Certainly not,it's a humerous name! Others no,its just funny.....im rc ...and i think its funny so there The Irish arnt pathetic enough to use the racist card. No I don't think it is. It's affectionate intention rescues it, IMO. ahh, no tisnt racist, t`be sure, t`be sure! Yeah, I'm Irish Catholic and I would say that some would be offended by that - some with a little shorter fuse than myself may try to dot your eye as well - personally I don't find it overly offensive, maybe just insensitive. You could always just refer to it as a Cathedral - I mean, I'm sure it has a name, right? I'm neither Irish nor Native American, which would seem to be the likely offended groups, however I would say that the nickname is not racist. It is politically incorrect but I don't fault anyone for political incorrectness. I think political correctness is stupid and completely unproductive. You have defined the perception of the cathedral when you say the word "affectionately." |
