London Underground Route to Cambridge? |
Travel Info I will be flying into London Heathrow Airport, Terminal 1 to be precise, and I was wondering what railways I need to take to get to Cambridge University? I believeI have to take the Piccadilly line to King's Cross, and transfer there, but transfer to which line? And which exit do I need to get off at? What would the ETA be from the airport to the actual university? Thanks :) Travel Tips It is quite simple to get to Cambridge from Heathrow. There are two different ways to get there, depending on how quickly you need to go. The first way is the simplest, the cheapest, but also takes the longest. When you arrive in terminal one, follow the signs to the Underground. The only line that runs to Heathrow is Piccadilly. However, it runs in two different directions if my memory serves. You want to be on the line heading towards Cockfosters to head into central London. This is quite simple, as the way trains are marked is the termination point of the line, so simply look for the train going to Cockfosters. You will stay on this train all the way to the Kings Cross Station. The Underground ride, if I am correct, should be just over an hour. When you arrive at Kings Cross, you will need to exit the Underground and follow the signs that say National Rail. When you arrive in the National Rail station, you will need to purchase a separate ticket for Cambridge. Then you will be directed to the correct platform for the next train. As a little tourist tip, you may be interested to know that the platform that Harry Potter takes to get to Hogwarts is indeed located in the National Rail section of the Kings Cross station. If you have time before your train, you may want to check it out and snap a few photos (it is located at platform 9 and 3/4 if I remember right... the train I last took to Cambridge departed from platform 10 so it was very close). The time to Cambridge varies depending on the train. If you are on an express, it takes just 45 minutes. If you are on a standard train, the ride is about 1 and a half hours. If you are more pressed for time, there is an alternative that is more expensive but faster. When you arrive, instead of going to the Underground, you can look for the "Heathrow Express." This is a high-speed train that goes directly from Heathrow to Paddington Station without making any stops. The cost is 15 pounds I believe and it takes 15 minutes to get to central London. When you arrive at Paddington, look for the Underground. You will need to take the Circle Line from Paddington to Kings Cross. (I believe the direction you need is Edgeware Road). This ride should not be more than 10 minutes. Thus, your trip from Heathrow to Kings Cross should be no more than 30 minutes rather than more than an hour using the other method. One last note: when you arrive at the train station in Cambridge, the walk to the actual college is quite long, so take that into account. However, it is lovely and scenic, with many shops and pubs along the way. Best of luck on your trip! Source(s): Lived in London, visited Cambridge Other Travel Tips |
