Is a Visitor-in-Transit Visa needed if you miss a connecting flight in London and BA places you in a hotel? |
Travel Info I assume that that would mean passing through immigration at Heathrow. Why would the British Consulate agree for such visa because this is a contingency situation? Also, why would the traveller be required to apply and pay the visa fee for a situation that might never happen? Does anyone have any similar experiences to relate? Travel Tips A couple of month's ago, I had to leave the transit area in order to check my second bag (Heathrow has a strict 1 bag only policy). I had to go through immigration and customs and my passport got stamped in the process. Then I had to re-check-in. So the answer is yes, however I'm not sure what would happen if you *didn't* have an existing visa for the UK and had to spend the night in a hotel. Might have to sleep in the airport, I'm thinking... Source(s): Personal experience Other Travel Tips You will not be able to enter the country without a Visa but if an airline is at fault leading to your missed flight they should pay. Friends got stuck in Turkey due to a technical fault and they got the tour company to pay for there visa's. If you cannot get the visa then you will have a pleasant night on a seat in the terminal or transit lounge. The answer would be easier to provide if you gave your nationality. Transit visas are required by a long list of nationalities. However, there are exemptions. Full details at the link below. The key thing to note is that they DO NOT entitle you to full entry into the UK. Therefore, the airline would have no obligation to provide you with a visa and/or pay for one as this is totally beyond their control and determined by your nationality and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Basically, you'd be stuck in the transit area. |
