Do I need to have a car if I want to live in LA?

Travel Info
Im going to study for Master's degree in LA (woodbury university) this september, just wondering if i should buy a car and where is the best place to get it? thanks in advance for helping me!

Travel Tips
Depends entirely on where you live. L.A.'s a big place and you may end up living 10, 20, 30 miles or more from Burbank. On the upside, there are some rapid commuter busses into Burbank from the outlying areas. So you could search for an apartment near one of the main bus lines. But as others have said, without a car, you'll have a very limited experience of all that L.A. and southern California have to offer.

Contrary to what some have said, do NOT bring a car from out of state, unless it's emissions tag states that it's California-legal. There's a hefty penalty for registering non-CA emmisions compliant cars. In fact, if you buy a car just before moving here, there's a good chance you'll be told to get it out of California. They don't want people buying cars out of state just to avoid the added cost of a CA-emissions compliant car. I don't recall the exact numbers, but the law states that you can not register an out-of-state car here if it has fewer than XXXX thousand miles on it.

it's not a requirement to have a car in Los Angeles.. but it sure does make EVERYTHING a lot easier. We do have Public Transportation here, that has improved in the last couple of years but.. it's still.. on the non-reliable and icky (dirty) side. At least with a car, you wouldnt have to depend on others..

PS
You can get used to the traffic--it's not as bad as you hear. Well.. some areas are...the biggest problem with having a car are the Gas prices out here.. we have some of the highest in the nation!
lived in L.A. almost all of my 36 years
yes! well u can go to a dealer or the pennysaver for a cheap car...
Yes, you need a car. Burbank is cool, but if you want to go to the beach, or get around LA, a car is definetely in order. I dont know where you are coming from, but I would get a car in the state where you live, and have it registered there, as registration fees can be quite high in California. Try Cars.com for a good used car, and get something reliable, with good fuel mileage, we do have pretty high gas prices here.
You did not indicate if you were attending the Burbank or San Diego campus of Woodbury, but I believe the MBA program is only offered at Burbank.

Yes you will find a car very useful in the Los Angeles area. The public transportation system, try as it may, is inadequate as your only means of getting around.

You need to obtain the car, if you choose to have one, when you get to California. There are too many problems trying to register out of state cars here because of the need to meet California emissions requirements.

Welcome to the United States, and good luck with your MBA program.
Yes, you will need a car. LA is the opposite of New York. While in the latter it is even preferred not to have a car, in LA (and probably all of California) you need to have a car. If you don't own it, then you'll probably be one of those who won't taste the pleasures of living in California.

BTW, which state do you come from? I suggest you buy a car from your own state then move it with you to Cal!

Good luck and best wishes!
