Desert in southern California...?

Travel Info
I am from Georgia and taking my kids to San Diego and LA in late July. I know it is the hottest time of the year in the desert. Will it be too hot to take them out to see what it looks like for a few hours? Any suggestions on where to go?

Travel Tips
From San Diego, Anza-Borrego State Park is your best bet. It is about 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive east of San Diego. Be warned that is will be really, really hot. The museum and visitor's center for the park will only be open on weekends during July so plan your visit for a weekend if you want to see the museum. The link to the Park is in sources below.

Whether you are going on a weekend to see the visitors center or not, make sure that you have a full tank of gas (fill up in Julian) and a lot of water, just in case you have car trouble. You should also know that cell phone coverage is intermittent in that part of California. You should be sure that someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. I went for a drive out in Anza-Borrego in August and we didn't pass any other cars for three hours so you if you have car trouble, no one may be passing you for quite a while. If you do have car problems, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR. It is much easier for someone looking for you to find your car then it is to find a person.

I hope I am not freaking you out with all of this. Just know that as long as you have a lot of water and someone knows where to look for you if you don't come back when expected, you shouldn't have any trouble. Source(s): http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page...
Other Travel Tips
Prepare for temperatures of 110-115, but go early in the day and you might be able to tolerate it better, still the temps will be in the 90s. Generally you'll find it much less humid than Georgia's summer heat. The headquarters of Anza-Borrego State Park in Borrego Springs has a good visitors center. However if it's a wide variety of cactus you want to see, I'd recommend the gardens at The Huntington in San Marino (adjacent to Pasadena). Search the images portion of Yahoo or Google for pics. You'll see a huge variety including sajaro (which aren't native to the CA desert).

Early in the day or close to sunset would be the best time to go.
Try Tahquitz Canyon outside of Palm Springs, it's an oasis (waterfalls) in the desert. It opens at 7:30am. Don't forget to stop for a date shake if you see a stand for one. Yum!
You could go to Josuha Tree National Park, northeast of Palm Springs. It's where Mormon explorers thought the plants/trees looked the prophet Josuha preaching/praying with his hands up in the air...(I don't see it myself, but you kinda see what you wanta see---now the cactus actually does look like that...LOL).....
There are some good answers already out there...

Hey Cowboy, how about this?

Fly into LAS VEGAS. You can stay there for a night (It's interesting, to say the least), take a drive down the strip at night, then drive to LA. If you stay at a place with a nice pool (like the Flamingo, which is really more like a water park), you can all have a nice swim. You can get a good look at the desert along the way. I highly recommend either leave early in the day, or at night. Just don't leave for LA on a Sunday, the traffic will be terrible.

It's PLENTY hot there. I was out at my in-laws over the weekend, and it was 110 degrees.

There's not a lot to do out in the desert, unless you are into desert life. Mostly a lot of rocks and weeds (makes it rather hard to play a good game of "I spy".

I commend you for trying to show the kids a different type of climate. Since LA is essentially a desert, I never thought of it as as something to be explored. Usually, I avoid it in the summer.

Addendum: If you want to drive out to Palm Springs, you can visit "The Living Desert" museum, which has exhibits from deserts around the world, not just California.
