What's better than MapQuest? |
Travel Info I want something that will do what MQ will do, but that gives me better maps. I just had a horrendous time printing out a simple map, and I never could "add a stop." I'll spare you the grim and boring details, but I have had it with mq. They're getting worse. I would love to buy a decent map of my area, but I haven't yet found one. Travel Tips I have been given ambiguous and downright incorrect maps and directions by Mapquest two or three times. I have had very good results from Yahoo maps. One reason for success with Yahoo is that I print out more than just the specific route suggested. I expand the area along the trip so I get a perspective of the whole region. Easier to regain my bearings if I make a wrong turn or get sidetracked for gas or a cafe, etc. Also nice to have the outer areas mapped to investigate alternate routes if there is heavy traffic, construction, accident. Another cool thing about yahoo; when a map is displayed there is an option to show traffic situations (like checking it just before departing) and has been very helpful. Don't get me wrong....I have had run ins with some moronic representatives at Yahoo over other matters; on the phone and via e-mail (like they are deaf, stupid or just uncaring). Point is, I'm not Yahoo's biggest fan overall and I don't work for them. Another source if available (like where I am, S.California) are Thomas Bros. Guides, book maps. very detailed and reliable. AAA has good maps free if a member (Automobile Club). Others I do a lot of motorcycle touring, and I use MS Streets&Trips to do my route planning. But for real detail, I've yet to find a map software that matches the good old Thomas Brothers map book. I dont like any online maps, but I do like the mapping software Streets & Trips or Microsoft maps. But most useful now for me is Telenav on my cell phone!!! It uses GPS to find me and give me directions. Google maps rocks, been using it for years. mapquest is notoriously bad. Get a Thomas Bros Map book. |
