Visiting Southern Calif this summer. Best way to visit USC? |
Travel Info We've heard bad things about the neighborhood around USC...any suggestions? Travel Tips The USC campus is lovely but some of the surrounding areas are not as nice. Remember you are in a large city! There is no problem in visiting the campus particularly during the day. I am there a lot and I can tell you that there is no problem walking around or even riding the USC buses. I might have some, and I say some, reservations about walking around anywhere at night. There should be no problem in visiting the campus though. Just stay on the campus. Others I love USC, but the neighborhood around it is pretty dicey. Fine enough by day, but rather unsafe at night. It's not uncommon to have your car stolen, vandalized, or broken into. I know staff members and faculty who had this happen to them. Visiting is really not that hard. You can stay at one of the downtown area hotels like the Bonaventure, and the campus is only a couple miles away. Unfortunately, USC is one of the few campuses I've seen that doesn't have that "college town" feel in the surrounding area, other than Greek Row and the nearby theaters. Did you have some more specific questions? We're happy to help. You'll be fine on campus. Just be sure to know where you're going. Take a gun with you? It's in the worst part of LA. Be careful as theives pray on tourists & visitors. If I was a parent I would NEVER let my kid go to USC. Good school, scary neighborhood! The best way to see it is during the day because the outside is the total barrio where the famous fires were during the Rodney King error. Go during the day for safety. If you are staying in Newport, I suggest leaving after morning rush hour, around 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. and leave USC around 2:00 P.M. to beat the afternoon traffic. You should be fine taking the 405 North to the 110 North at that time. The weekend traffic is lighter, but I don't know if as much stuff is open on the weekend on campus. Have fun! All the streets surrounding USC are very busy. Figueroa Street and Jefferson stay packed. Try staying away from them durning rush hour and lunch time. |
