Spearfishing in Southern California?

Travel Info
Just have a couple of questions in regards to the above.

1. Do you need a license to own a speargun in southern Califonia?

2. Are there certain areas you can't go spearfishing?
Ie: Can you just go off the beach or coast?

Thanks in advance.

Travel Tips
1. You don't need a speargun license, but you do need a state fishing license.

2. There are certain ecological reserves where you are not allowed to fish, such as La Jolla ecological reserve. Inquire locally before entering the water. If you have a Thomas Guide, many show the ecological reserve boundaries.

Catalina is an excellent location for spearfishing.

Finally, be aware of what you can and cannot legally spear:

BIG no-no's include giant sea bass, lobster, abalone, and garibaldi (easy to spot- they're orange). Source(s): http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mapregs5.html...
