Should Sabah become independant from Malaysia?

Travel Info
Sabah has been treated like a colony for years now by Malaysia, taking 95% of the revenue from its natural recource. It is the richest state in Malaysia when it comes to natural recource but because of the injustices of Malaysia it records the highest poverty rate and is the poorest. Although its not spoken of in public there is a growing idea for Sabah to break free from its corrupt oppressors.

Look at Brunei, a small and rich nation, thank to the then sultan who stand fast in his decision not to join Malaysia. If Brunei is to be part of Malaysia, 99% of his money will be sucked off by the ever-hungry central government. The sultan will lost all his privileges and authority. Sabah is now sold to the philippine and indonesian muslims by its caretaker. Should overthrow the state government and breakfree!!!!

Would Sabah have survived as an independent nation if it hadn't joined Malaysia in 1963? Chances are it would now be the poorest part of Philippines or Indonesia, resulting from the confrontation.

I guess we all have faint memories of why we needed each other then and still do now.

The richest states are probably Sarawak and Terengganu due to Oil and Gas, not Sabah.
my opinion, sabah should be independent. the from what i see it the central government is not helping sabah much.
Hmm.. this question is borderline seditious but i agree with hehe ha. Sabah as part of modern Indonesia or Philippines would have become a sad backwater.

I think it's much better off being part of Malaysia.
Uh, that is a heavy post... ok, start from the beginning. As mentioned above, had Sabah not joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 it would have been gobbled up by the Philippines or Indonesia, or worse, it would be a hotly contested bone between those two nations nowadays. One way or other, Sabah would have lost its natural riches, and I daresay it would be worse to-day than it already is. Back then, the leading Sabah politicians - let's don't forget that Sabah had its own government, flag and all between 31 August 1963 and 16 September 1963 - were humble enough to realise they could not be a country by themselves and chose to join the Federation. But there were also 21 points - conditions - under which Sabah joined the Federation. Sarawak had similar arrangements. This was to prevent that Sabah or Sarawak would become a modern colony under former Malaya. Ask now around, any student in Sabah - and probably also in Peninsular Malaysia - they have never heard of those 21 points. A year or so ago there was question of translating those 21 points into the Malay language, which found great opposition from modern day politicians...

Not long after the formation of Malaysia the whole of Sabah's government, all the heads, conveniently perished in the double 10 "accident"... since then, Malaysia's richest State when the Federation was founded has seen a steady decline and is now the Federations poorest state... uh, how come...?

But look at the bright side. The 'Filipino and Indonesian' problem is more or less solved in so far as those two countries do not claim much of Sabah any more and tend to accept Malaysia as a whole as we know it as it is. Education, welfare, and medical infrastructure is working all right, which certainly would not be the case if North Borneo would belong to a neighbouring country right now, I am sure we can agree on that.

Since 1963 times have changed, of course, but if we look closely, could Sabah now become independent? The Federal government makes sure this won't happen, there is still enough petrol around, and they also profit of Sabah's palm oil... so I'd say let's concentrate on the nearest problems at hand: pollution, eradication of cultural aspects, corruption, conservation of the environment etc. If we do that all together we can history let be history and maybe, just maybe, one day look back and say: yes, it was a good thing.
trying to think positive...
Well tell that to Malaysians who smuggled Sabah women to the Semenanjung for prostitution...
