Malaysia already has a well developed tourism industry and ranks among one of the top tourist destinations in Asia with a variety of attractions.

Personally, I feel that Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and the various Malaysian diplomatic missions in foreign countries are doing very well in promoting Malaysia as a tourist destination abroad.

With due respect to other answerers, I dont think that distance really matters nowadays. What might be scaring US citizens is that Malaysia is an Islamic country and hence, there could be some anger against them. Travel advisories issued by the State Department do not mention Malaysia specifically as a trouble spot but when Asia is spoken about in such notices, in general....tourists do get wary.

The problem with tourism to Malaysia, especially from the US, is the distance. I know, I've made the trip several times. It can take a full day at least to get there. There is plenty to do once you get there.
