What it means "orang asli" in malay? |
Travel Info can you explain this Travel Tips Orang asli literally means the "original people. They are the aborigines and the first human inhabitants of Malaysia. It is a collective term introduced by anthropologists and administrators for the 18 sub-ethnic groups generally classified for official purposes under Negrito, Senoi and Proto-Malay. They numbered 105,000 in 1997 representing a mere 0.5 per cent of the national population. Slave raids into Orang Asli settlements were not an uncommon feature in the 18th and 19th centuries. The slave-raiders were mainly Malays and Bataks, who considered the Orang Asli as 'kafirs', 'non- humans', 'savages' and 'jungle-beasts.' History books of 30 years ago stated that Malays migrated into present day peninsula Malaysia about 2,000 years ago and occupied the more fertile valleys whereas the orang aslis retreated to the less fertile hill tops.
