What do (Jaya, Kuala) mean in Malay? |
Travel Info I find these words in many areas in Malaysia So what do they mean? Travel Tips Jaya = Success unless its a person's name, in which case, it depends on the race of the person. Indian: eg Jayaratnam, Sivajaya..... Malay/Indonesian - Putera Jaya, Metro Jaya, Jayapuri....M'sias have this thing that if you put a 'winning' name, it brings sort of 'good luck'?....But Putera Jaya didnt work out though, which does not go against the idea behind this. You see, in the Malay cultural belief for example,if you are given a name not 'serasi' (fitting) to you, you will usually get sick. So kids, when they always get sick will get a change of name - perhaps not on the official papers but certainly the name you are called commonly. Since Malays, Chinese, Indians live side by side, there is an suttle interchange of these beliefs. So you get names like: Bukit Beruntung (Fortunate Hill)...which is not serasi actually... Kuala = Estuary (he he he....do I get the bonus prize?). Kuala Lumpur was once an estuary, as are Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Kedah, Kuala Selangor still.... Source(s): Book of Smart As* Other Travel Tips Kuala - mouth of a river Jaya = Success Kuala = Mouth of river Both are popularly used for place names in Malaysia Jaya is victory. Kuala is estuary! when u seperate them with the name of place, jaya = success, kuala = city. Kuala Lumpur = City of Mud Usually u see them Subang Jaya, Kelana Jaya bla bla.. its just a name. |
