Hmm, where to shop eat in JB. Hopefully I can provide you with some quick info:

Shop:
City Square - bah, overpriced stuffs ...
Holiday Plaza - Lesser DVDs these days, got a raid sweep a few days ago
Jusco - The new one, VERY BIG! Lots to buy there
Plaza Pelangi - Nothing much there also

Eat:

Pelangi area - alot of shophouses got decent food. there's one Jap restaurant around there that's really authentic at fair prices, all the local japs eat there. hmm, if this interst you, email me, i give you a more detailed outline to go : nystul @ gmail.com

don't go there, nothing much in JB
There are only a few shopping mall, CitySquare, Plaza Pelangi, Holiday Plaza and Jusco at Tebrau.
If you are looking for gals clothings, there are some boutiques in Pelangi and Tebrau area too.
It all depends on what kind of stuff you will like to shop?
City Square has more of youngster, teenager's stuff, Holiday Plaza is more for wild, clubbing ppl(and of course, vcd and dvd buyers), then the rest are more for everybody.

There are nice food in JB, but can't compare with the food in KL.
If talking about non-halal food, there are Pelangi, Tebrau and Johor Jaya hawker center.
Pelangi's has a nice claypot chicken rice stall. Tebrau's has a lot of nice "pegang" seafood. JJ has a lot of good food . Then, Thai food at Kerabau(near to Tebrau highway), Japanese food at 2chongwan(at permas) and Korean food(forgot the name. is near to the international schooL) by seaside.Forgot to mention, the nasi lemak at permas too.
