Why someone who will go to surgery have to fast? |
Travel Info Why someone who will go to surgery have to fast? Travel Tips i had undergone a surgery before and asked the same question to the doctor. he said when you're unconcious, the food may flow and choke up the lungs Others They have you fast because depending on what your having done it could be the location of the surgery or the medication they give you to put you to sleep and they don't want you to get sick from it. one main reason is if you have a full stomach, and you are unconscious, and the food comes back up, you could aspirate(cause the liquid or digesting food into ur lungs) To avoid the risk of aspiration during anesthesia. The recommendations have been reduced to 6 hours for food and 2 hours for clear liquids, but most hospitals still rely on the old "nothing after midnight the night before surgery" guideline. http://www.asahq.org/publicationsandserv... Malaysia...?? Maybe General Health Care would be a better place for this question. Anyway, anesthesia can do funny stuff to a body. Some people have no response, they do just fine. Others have a pretty nasty reaction- they throw up.... Dunno about you, but I'd hate to throw up when I'm under and possibly aspirate it.... fasting to ensure your stomach to be empty, you dun wan to let the surgeom aw what you eat jus now?..... anyway, that's a joke. theoretically, fasting can take down the risk in surgery, why? ..... |
