When you were born, did you have a choice to decide your name? When you were born, do you have a choice to decide who you want your parents to be?

The current law automatically defines but as we grow up, it is up to us to decide what we actually want to be.
religion are often used and abused by people to fulfill their own agenda. either they use religion as a sword, use religion as a good cause, use religion to mask their evil deeds or use religion to blame something else.

i think that whomever wished to convert to other religion, just do it and there is no need to shout to the whole world about it. Because publicity could either go with u or against u.
no. if u force a person to do something they dont like, the result will be worse.
why not let the malays choose themselves when they grow up.
why must force them like an uncivilised way?

to: evangeline.
lina joy also changed her name, what's wrong.
if u r comfortable with a new name, why not?????
religion is just something to keep u calm n something for u to lean back whn u need help.

KEPERCAYAAN KEPADA ALLAH... not kepada tuhan..
some answerer quote this b4..
not all muslims are malay and not all malay are muslims
u automatically become Muslim because your parents are muslim...and as majority, sure define malaysia as muslim country....and that goes the same to all religion in this entire universe....people convert to other religion for a reason, and because they want too.....

if i given a choice to choose....
ok..let put it this way...
if u are paris hilton(with brain)....do u think u going to let go...
and change ur name to paris no money!....

when people in their comfort zone, i don't see why they should change.....

that goes to all religion...

Religion (faith) should absolutely NOT be something which is determined by LAW. Faith, by definition, is something felt in the heart, and you can surely not legislate for that? Could you properly enforce a law which, for instance, says that everyone must be heterosexual (that has been tried, pretty well everywhere, and failed)?

It is common sense that the way you are brought up, and the behaviour and customs you observe as a child will exert some influence on your beliefs, attitudes and actions as an adult. But as an adult you may be subjected to other external influences which change your ideas and opinions on all manner of things, including "faith". In the event that someone (as a developed adult) then subsequently feels strongly enough to decide he/she wants to "convert" to another faith, why should any MAN MADE LAW prevent or even slightly inhibit that decision?

In fact the Malaysian Constitution GUARANTEES freedom of religion, so surely any law which in ANY way forbids a change of faith is contrary to the constitution, and thereby by definition, itself illegal?

The problem is that there appears to be grey areas where Syariah Law and Secular Law merge.

But enforcing a LAW which purports to prevent apostasy, is surely doing a disservice to the Islamic faith itself, as (a) it portrays Islam as an inflexible, intolerant religion, (b) it suggests that Islam requires to COMPEL people to remain in the faith and (c) surely those who feel strongly enough to denounce their Islamic beliefs should not be compelled to remain in the faith as they will inevitably become a disruptive influence (in the "it only takes one bad apple" sense)?
