It's perhaps worthy of note that some consequences of the riot (which unrest was almost entirely restricted to the Federal Territory and Selangor, plus Melakka) included the expulsion of Dr. Mahatir (an outspoken supporter of the rights of the Melayu) from UMNO and the resignation of the then Prime Minister Tuanku Abdul Rahman, and that the State of Emergency declared at the time has never been lifted.

What could be learned, but apparently hasn't been, is that to extoll the virtues of racial harmony requires that all citizens, of whatever ethnicity, have uniformly equal rights under the law of the land?
