My best friend and I are going to KL this friday as a budget traveller.? |
Travel Info Can anyone give us any advice as this is our first time there alone. Travel Tips For sightseeing - KLCC, otherwise known as the Petronas Towers. KLCC is the shopping centre on the first few floors of the building. Loads of super posh shops, like Gucci and stuff. There鈥檚 a big park at the back of KLCC and it's nice to sit outside with an iced coffee and watch the world go by. - If you turn up at about 8am, they have tours up the towers, but you have to get there that early to get tickets. - There鈥檚 also a supermarket on the bottom floor and you can stock up with European food or whatever! - The KL Tower has a rotating restaurant with fab views. The food isn't the best, but it's worth a look. - Bukit Bintang 鈥?literally translated, this means Star Hill. One of the main smart shopping areas of KL. You鈥檒l find your Starbucks and Planet Hollywood round here. There are loads of malls round here. Sungei Wan is one of the shopping centres and it鈥檚 pretty good for cheap electronics. Lot 10 is good for clothes. - Chinatown 鈥?Jalan Petaling 鈥?great for dvd鈥檚, rip off stuff and all sorts of bits and pieces. Wear a money belt and leave all valuables at the hotel. - The National Mosque 鈥?stunning and definitely worth a look. It's important to dress appropriately, though. - If you want a colonial treat, go to the Carcosa Seri Negara for high tea. It鈥檚 the poshest hotel in KL, and it鈥檚 by the lake, bird and flower gardens. It鈥檚 an old colonial mansion, and there aren鈥檛 many left in that neck of the woods. Even if you don't want to go to the hotel, the gardens are beautiful and worth a look. -Batu Caves - a Hindu holy site and tourist attraction a little out of town. - Central Market 鈥?a bit touristy but worth a look. A traditional old market building that has been turned into a tourist market 鈥?some coolish stuff, though. -The old train station and Merdeka (Independence) Square. May sound a bit odd, but the architecture is amazing. For Entertainment: - Bangsar 鈥?it鈥檚 a suburb about 20 mins by cab from the Golden Triangle area, but I鈥檇 recommend it above anywhere else for an evening out. There are loads of fantastic restaurants such as the Telawi Street Bistro or Alexis (which does fantastic cheesecake), and cheaper options too. - If you happen to be there on a Sunday, you鈥檙e in luck because that鈥檚 the night market and you can get all sorts of things there 鈥?dvd鈥檚, local food and fruit, clothes鈥?everything! - Night markets off Bukit Bintang for local food - it's fantastically yummy and a bit of an adventure. Try the satay and see how it's really meant to taste. -For fairly cheap drinks, Finnegans do a pretty good happy hour -Heritage Row just near the Sheraton is great - lots of bars and restaurants. -Zouk is the superclub in town and they do some really good nights with international djs -Beach Club is a tourist and local favourite. Bit of a meat market, but it can be fun. For very reasonable, no frills accommodation, look at: http://www.tunehotels.com/ Hope you have a great time. KL is an amazing city, very friendly, safe and fairly cheap - I hope you like it as much as I do. Source(s): Former travel agent, lived in KL Other Travel Tips my advice, left for somewhere else in Malaysia. KL isn't safe, assuming you are women. many snatch thief, rapist, robber, scam. why r you interested in KL? shopping mall is abundant in your country. go to east coast peninsular instead for real life culture example or Borneo for fascinating nature display. Don't stay in KL for too long. Read your country's travel advisory to learn more. Don't trust strangers and especially over-friendly 'Malaysians' (yes, because then the crime is committed, the police will blame foreigners for committing it). Be yourself and try to stay away from crowded places. My best advice is to go to Malaysian Borneo or stay away as far as you can from KL. Its a snakepit there... i've read the previous posts.. if you haven't chged your mind about going to KL,there's the Twin Tower and KL tower to visit. 'Jata Negara' too. you can find cheap motels in KL but be careful everytime you go out. Petaling Street is cool too. be extra careful while walking...walking against traffic is safer. and move out of the range where a person can snatch your bag when you see a vehicle nearing. they tend to attack tourists as they're less likely to be aware of their surroundings. i'm actually telling tourists to stay away from my country when im suppose to be promoting visit Malaysia 2007.. lol I have seen many budget hotels there for $50 or less per night and you can get a bowl of rice or noodles for less than $4 if you go to the right places. Entrance to the twin towers is free but you have to get a ticket from the KLCC shopping complex next door but you have to be there early (8.30) to get a ticket. Following on from the previous answer about the traffic, Penang must be one of the worst places on Earth for pedestrians, if a wild dog is crossing the road the drivers will slow down to let them cross but if you are human they will speed up to try and knock you over, so be careful if you visit Penang! For me, KL is my least favourite city to travel to..Don't stay for too long in KL. Many things to see and many things to do and you'll enjoy it. |
