Travel Info What is Knighted?is it being honoured by the State n we must call Rusdie 'Sir'? Travel Tips A knighthood is an honour (and a non-hereditary title) bestowed by the State, but confirmed and conferred by the Queen as (token) Head of State, in a sword-wielding ceremony. Much like the Malaysian honours are bestowed in Malaysia by the nine Sultans. (I predict the latter practice will need to experience slow down in coming years as the Datuks and Sri Tans presumably now outnumber the ordinary citizens) In reality however, the decision to award any honour to whim, is now made by the Government of the day, and the Queen probably has no real say in the matter, unless she is inclined to precipitate a constitutional crisis (which in turn may seriously imperil her income). So those Malaysians who feel they must protest (for an award to the [fatja'd] writer of a book they most likely haven't read) should direct their complaints to that celebrated champion of Islamic causes, Mr. (no doubt soon to be "Lord") Tony Bliar. Others Huh? Could you be more specific please?..but if you were asking about Salman Rushdie then..he's a no-no/unwelcome person here in Malaysia... Furthermore calling him a 'Sir'..yucks! he dont deserved any title at all! It's being honoured by the Queen rather than by the state - though you could argue, of course, that her being the sivereign, it's worth even more than being honoured by the state. If you are a polite being, yes, you now call Salman Rushdie Sir. (If you're ever lucky enough to meet him. I'd swap with you any time for that, he's brilliant). But there's no legal obligation. You could call him by his first name straight away without Sir or Rushdie and the only thing happening would be people would think you're a bit strange or rude or both. you may call him Sir Rushdie now like Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Elton John, ....many more. But it's not a must to call him so It's the honor from the Queen of England equivalent to Tan Sri here in Malaysia Bo$$ is correct a knighthood or Sir is something like a Tan Sri and a Lord would be something like a Datok. Personally speaking I think old Queenie must have had one too many gin and tonics the day she thought it was a good idea to give that oily greasy snake in the grass publicty seeking 'man' a knighthood. He has already sold his soul to the Devil and would no doubt sell his Grandmother if the price was right. To 'award' him a knighthood is a slap in the face to the millions of British Muslims. I think old Queenie is always mabok these days and she still thinks that Great Britain is the super-power it was 200 years ago. Mr Bean a British Christian Yep Sir Rusdie it is. Never judge a book by it's cover. Obviously he deserves it, no fool wld blindly 'knight' him. |
