Why is it that everything foreign has to be 'better' to Malaysians? |
Travel Info I mean literally... consider consumer goods, cars, entertainment etc. Even to the extent of health clubs and 'people'? What do you think? You can kindly be excused for not mentioning food as being 'better' than foreign foods as I can understand where Malaysians are coming from, but this is referring to other 'things' non-Malaysian that is considered 'superior' in quality/value to Malaysians. Travel Tips foreign moon is always brighter and rounder Others Delusional perception perhaps? Or reality? Personally, there're certain things I'd buy foreign. The basics, I'm happy enough going local (saves me some dosh to go buy foreign stuff. haha). Human tends to complain cos most of the things are too close to them and too close for comfort. They tend to forget to only compare apples to apples or oranges to oranges. Take for example a proton and a nissan. How to compare? The price is already a factor to consider. Sometimes even for just a mere $10 gives you a product of a better catagory. I buy things based on the appeal, reliability and cost, be it from Malaysia or from any where in the world. Well, depends. I don't consider all things foreign to be good. I trust "Made in Malaysia" more than "Made in China". Foreign cars are definitely better than Malaysian cars. But I generally regard Malaysian furnitures as better than, say, Ikea furnitures for the same price. Ikea furnitures are simply overcharged cheap products. But the place is nice though. A normal thinking I guess. When you buy something from outside of the country, means IMPORTED things, so it should be GOOOD. Just like our PROTON, if its for EXPORT, you should see the spec. compared to those sold to local. It's the common Malaysian mentality that has been embedded into our thoughts over the past century and more. it's "Colonial Mentality" - and we perceive that owning something foreign is better quality and puts "us" in a higher category. Not actually knowing, that foreigners prefer our locally made stuff, because its cheaper and probably of equal (if not better) quality. Why are Protons being sold cheaper in the UK than in Malaysia? Competition in the UK market? Why can't Malaysian Protons be cheaper here than the Proton cars in the UK (which by the way, is of a much higher spec)? Sad to say, the colonial mentality exist in Malaysia at every level. From the lay-man you see on the street, right up to highest civil servant and government official. Not all Malaysians are like that, but most of them are. |
