Did you join YA to help others or for fun? |
Travel Info IF you meant to help, did you help anyone in real life that makes a different to that person? If possible please share your story here. Travel Tips Anyway, as for me... I was here to find out some information on martial arts initially... but I bumped into the R&S (Religion and Spirituality) section and I got hooked into it. It was only later that I met some Malaysians in there and decided to take a peek into this section... PEEKABOO... I thought I was dreaming, but this place was so alive! It wasn't solely a TRAVEL section (as some would love to emphasize on, but a favorite hangout with all kinds of Malaysians from around the world... I mean, LITERALLY!). That was when I got hooked into Y/A. Occassionally taking a peek into other sections like Mental Health and Fitness (they are my profession actually)... I'm an instructor for Taekwondo with over 17 years of experience and was the trainer for National/World record holders in Muay Thai Kickboxing in Malaysia. You can check out my students who are currently in the Malaysia Book of Records and making their way through Guiness for several feats. What motivates them? What is the secret behind all their achievements? My students keep breaking records after records for at least 2-3 times a year. They are also good mix of all different races and genders by the way (hardly any Thais that I know of LOL)... and they are all Malaysia Boleh people (as the Malays would call them "mesra alam" people) :-) ---Its the things that I grew up with that makes me who I am today and being able to share with my students this far... and to keep pushing forward, to the very limit of our own capacity and NEVER GIVE UP! In Yahoo Answers, I guess the most memorable person I had a share of experience with is with Robin from the R&S. Here is a link to our discussion and till today we're good friends :-) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... On another question (which is very heartening for me), is on a person who is on HIV medication dependent (and with all my heart, I WISH I could do something more to help him as I can relate with him through my personal experience teaching meditation to HIV patients in Thailand... in some ways I feel that I'm blessed to be able to at least answer to this guy in his request): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... As a matter of fact some of the things I've posted in my blog site is related to the cases that I've been working on through Yahoo Answers. Some of them didn't deserve to be chosen as Best Answer but I felt that there was more to be done as I felt a certain 'void' despite the answer that I had given to them was considered the 'best', so I continued a personal discussion through my blog post... And guess what? People just keep coming back! I used to work with rehabilitating drug addicts, hardcore criminals and other kinds of HUMAN BEINGS who are willing to change too, while I was a monk. Many of these people were neglected and treated lower than animals by the so-called loving society we live in today. I can't help it but to feel sorry for some of them at times, and these people really touched my heart as I sit and ponder about how lucky I am and others who are not in their shoes. This inspired me to continue my effort to work on people who are genuine and sincere enough to stand on their own feet and walk on the right path. I also hope that some of you would take my experience into consideration as to why I am the person I am today and why I view things at a certain angle and also why I wouldn't want to 'change'. Just as in Trustee's post, I had mentioned that I live by the motto of "NEVER GIVE UP". Its the spirit that keeps me going, on and on. Its the courage that lets me face at whatsoever consequences I may encounter along the way. I leave it to your discretion to see how I've been helping others in the past and how I will continue to do so in the future. I guess we are all related to one another in some way and we are all helping one another by being a part of Yahoo Answers here. Lastly, I am also very grateful to both my parents and especially my teachers whom I am totally devoted to. They are my guiding lights in this world of darkness... :-) Source(s): Note to Dead Man Walking... I am sorry but I can't help it. I've been writing for some time and I just love to write... maybe I was brought up a nerd thats why... Other Travel Tips I joined to help people. I was a peer counselor in high school and have tried to make myself available to people all throughout my life. My brother committed suicide when he was 16 (I was 10), and I always wondered if he would still be here if he had had someone trustworthy to talk to. So, I try to be that person just in case I could help someone in his position. What about you? Originally joined YA because I needed answers. But now I also look for questions that I can help answer cos it's good to share. As for real life, I do some community projects which I guess does make a difference in people's lives - mostly do volunteer work at animal shelters, join the occasional blood donation campaign etc. But mostly I think it makes a difference in MY life, cos it makes me realize how fortunate I am, and it feels rewarding everytime I know I helped someone. That's a good question. My self & spouse here are just for fun. Yep, sometimes we tried to help others on Economics section (Whenever we have time to scribble the answer) I joined for both reasons really, but mostly to help others. Yes in fact I helped several people over come their addictions. Another was giving up on life because of being abused. another had who tried to commit suicide several times. A person who had become depressed and was on a self destructive path, we talked alot, I counseled her but also was a friend to her. We are now good friends and I am glad to say that she is no longer depressed and views life differently, she is happy with herself and very content in her life now. She contributes her change of view to my help and kindness. However I contribute her change to herself, her determination and the amount of work she put in and a willingness to admit something was wrong and that she needed help. She also made alot of choices and stuck to making that change even though sometimes it was very hard to do. Nobody can help a person until there ready to be helped and are willing to work hard at it and put in the time. im here for 3 reasons: im bored at work, and i have alot of time to kill i tot of being nice to people and help i want to score the points |
