Travel Tips I don't know where you are from, or what currency you normally use, but in KL, you get 3.47 Ringits for 1 US dollar. As with anything you buy, anywhere in the world the old saying always applies "You get what you pay for". Are you looking for a bargain? You must consider that Malaysia's primary export until recently has been Palm Oil. Electronic goods are imported from China, Korea and Japan and are hit with pretty heavy import taxes at the ports, so you end up paying almost as much as you would in the US or in the EU. But if you are looking for very small electronic goods, such as a 1 or 2 gig thumb drive, they are cheaper than in other countries because of bulk purchasing by the retailer. I have to agree with previous posts reccomending Plaza Low Yat which is near the Times Square Mall and right beside BB Plaza. As fas as jewelery is concerned, I can say that I did also look for jewelry during my month stay in KL and I found that the prices were cheaper than in the US, but the overall quality wasn't as good, so I guess you have to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Overall though, I think the best quality / presentation in the jewelry stores has to be in Habib in the KLCC mall under the twin towers. The best rule of thumb to remember while in KL, is Haggle! Haggle! Haggle! Everyone is willing to cut you a deal if they think you are gonna go to the next vendor and buy from someone else, and all the vendors in Low Yat are selling the same stuff and are very competitive with each other. So don't be afraid to negotiate your own deal. Source(s): Been there, done that... Other Travel Tips Best place for laptops and IT gadgets is Low Yat Plaza, behind Jalan Bukit Bintang. There are loads of shops and you can even get second hand laptops. Do not commit on the first shop you find. Shop around and bargain first. Gold jewellery - get it from Poh Kong or other big name shops, they have many outlets all over Malaysia. The big name shops are a little guarantee that the stuff you pay for is the real thing. If you are in bukit bintang area, maybe i suggest for you to go to low yat for a laptop and wah chan at berjaya times square and bukit bintang plaza for gold shop... |
