Other Travel Tips There are a lot of backpacker motel somewhere around KOMTAR area at Georgetown. That depends on your definition of "cheap". If you are looking for something of less than US$20 per room per night, these are called budget hotels. There are many such hotels in Penang (mostly in Georgetown) catering to tourists on a shoestring budget. An example is Garden City Inn (corner of Chulia Street & Penang Street) where it costs only US$3.57 per person per night on twin sharing basis. As for "good," again, very subjective. There is an association of budget hotels and all hotels registered with it are of minimum standards in cleanliness, facilities etc. Since Penang is dependent on tourism, stringent action will be taken against any hotel found not providing such standards. Do a search on Penang budget hotels. However, there are many, many more which do not have a website so do not appear in any search engines and online booking is out. What I suggest is to go personally and try one, any one. Then walk around and check into another for a different experience. If your "good" refers to surroundings, I recommend you stay in Georgetown (around Chulia Street) which is central and have easy access to all parts of Penang. Anyway, there are few budget hotels in Batu Ferringhi as the big hotels would have taken the beaches anyway but as said, it depends on your "good," which may refer to the relaxation away from the city!
