Well, the Malay Peninsula formed the Federation of Malaya, which became independent in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo joined the Federation.

So Malaysia as a country is 44 years old, but I'm not sure how you can make an average out of that?

Well, based on Bicycle Repairman's answer the average age of Malaysia should be 50+44=94/2=47. Would that be a good compromise and acceptable on the Peninsula and in Borneo, wait for another three years to celebrate an average age of 50 years of Malaysia...? Because we here in Borneo are a bit contrite that Malaysia celebrates 50 years when Malaysia as a political unity as we know it to-day was only founded in 1963... oh, well, this kind of hair splitting is for our YB's, we mere mortals have to work to pay generously for that type of hair splitting...
