Travel Tips
errmmm, am not quite sure about budget accomodation...you could try driving along some of those not-so-famous beaches and you'll find plenty of those smaller hotels that offer pretty good prices. however, be warned as many of these places have poor heating, and communal bathrooms. so if you don't fancy waiting in line to use the john, well......

as for ourist attractions, try visiting the kek lok si temple/pagoda. it's one of the city's landamarks.

whilst you are in penang, the best thing to do would be to try and sample the local cuisine. penang is famous for its char kuey teow, which is basically fried noodles. trust me, it's delicious and it won't burn a hole in your pocket.
after that, try some othe stuff, like nasi kandar, rojak, satay, air selasih and basically anything you can get your hands on. best place to try nasi kandar is the "penang kayu" nasi kandar restaurant. don't worry about getting there, just ask the cabbie and he'll know the way.

oh, don't forget to sample the seafood. it's fresh and cooked in a way that'll send your cholestrol level skyrocketing, but it'll be worth it. best place to get seafood would be "the end of the world" restaurant. that's what it's called. again, sk the cabbie, although this place is not quite as well known as some others. you might want to try ikan bakar, with is barbecued fish.

as for gifts and souveniers, maybe batik would be a good gift. you'll find batik stores and stalls all over the place, so don't worry about looking for one. also, try to buy whatever you need on penang island, as prices are slightly higher on the mainland.

enjoy your trip!

Agora Hotel on Macalister road. You can also try the cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap motels on Beach Street(Lebuh Pantai)
Tambun Biscuits.
Kek Lok Si, the Snake temple, Batu Feringgi beach, Gurney Drive and some Hawker Food centres.
I live in Penang.
You can check out Hotel Malaysia in Penang Road. It should be below RM150 per nite. Penang's mostly about food. Most popular stuff people usually bring home after visiting Penang would be the tambun biscuits. Him Heang or Ghee Hiang are the brands you should go for. Him Heang's outlet is along Burma Road. Ghee Hiang is somewhere along Macalister Road. They are very well known in Penang. Warning : it's not halal though if you are a Muslim.
Special tourist attraction would be : Ferringhi Beach, Snake Temple, Penang Hill, Fort Cornwallis, Gurney Drive at night, Khoo Kongsi (nice architecture), Youth Park, Botanical Garden. Go New Lane for food at night or Lorong Selamat during the day. Spoilt for choice! Don't forget to try the Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Chee Cheong Fun, Curry Mee!!!! Never ending list. You should make more trips to Penang! :)
