What is the (rough) percentage of Chinese who can speak Mandarin in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia? |
Travel Info I am a Malay who is planning to take Mandarin seriously. However I don't want my effort to go to waste if I am not able to use it on a daily basis. I know it is quite difficult to get to a precise percentage but any good estimate is appreciated! Travel Tips I think most of Malaysian Chinese can speak/understood Mandarin... Maybe not all can speak fluently, but mostly understand Mandarin. In addition to that, some can also speak other dialect such as Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien etc. and sometimes depends on area too; such as KL people can speak Cantonese and Hakka, Penangite (sometimes chinese and non-chinese speaks Hokkien)... There are also some from English speaking family who don't speak chinese. Maybe some older generation who only speaks their own dialect, but nowadays, many chinese who attend SRJK(C) speaks Mandarin in school... they'll hv no problem in speaking Mandarin. Seriously, if you want to learn a language. learn proper language. you'll benefit fr Mandarin as you can converse with almost all Chinese in Malaysia. Even in KL area where many people speaks Cantonese, they still can speak Mandarin fluently and understood Mandarin. Why only learn a dialect if you have a better choice (learning Mandarin)? Try to understand this: not all Chinese can speak/understood same dialect, but most Chinese (even from different dialect speaking environment) can speak/understand Mandarin. Go ahead and learn Mandarin... you'll nv regret. Others 95% of the chinese speaks mandarin including dialects. chinese who don't know how to speak chinese(mandarin or other dialect) is known as banana man.. because the skin is yellow but the inner is white (speak english) haha.. nice nickname? my guess is not many, may be 50-50. reason is many of chinese in KL dont go to chinese school due to not enough chinese school in klang valley. but many chinese outside KL know mandarin. but if you learn mandrian many chinese in the world will understand it and you dont have to worry to speaking to them even there are from difference direct. i worth to learn as the popularity getting more In KL most Chinese speaks Cantonese and also Mandarin. I believe the Mandarin speakers would be about 60% of the KL Chinese population but another 15% of them would probably understand enough to converse. Outside KL, there is a higher % of Mandarin speaking chinese. As a direct answer to your question, you will be able to use it on a daily basis in KL. |
