Las vegas/ the strip/old town?

I think the strp is the better option. I found he old part was qiute tacky! But do take a trip down there for the overhead light show.There are lots of brilliant themed hotels on the strip. Lots to choose from. For adults Bellagio is probably the best but New York might suit a 12 year old

All the hotels have pools and are close to the entertainment as most hotel has entertainment of its own. you have to decide if its worth th emoney to stay in a luxory class hotel, or an economy hotel is the biggest question
Mandalay Bay has the best pools. They even have a fake beach. I'm not sure if the pools are open on winter though. I just noticed one X'mas season most of the pools were closed. Downtown is nice to visit at night, but it's a seedy place relative to the trip. Circus Circus is a nice place for a 12 year old.
You can't go wrong on the Strip. Avoid the seedy downtown area, especially since you are taking a child. A lot of crime downtown.
