What's it like living in the Manchester area?

What are the pro's and cons of living in Manchester?

Travel Tips
I've lived here for over 40 years, married, brought up a child and run a very good business until I retired.

Not the same for everyone and it could depend on where you choose to live in the Manchester area.

The City centre has been rejuvenated and there are properties in the centre with some good links to the business areas. I believe the costs are high but there is much less travelling.

Move out into the Greater Manchester area and you will find leafy suburbs and more unsavoury places, something found in all big city suburbs.

Nobody can tell you the best area to choose but a visit and stay for a few days will give a flavour that will be invaluable.

I hope you get some satisfaction from a visit and form a judgement that will lead to a conclusion worthy of a discerning person.

well, if you can put up with the lancastrians, the lancashire air, the lancashire language and the lack of man utd supporters then you're well away

it's just like any othe rbig city (barring London of course) - its got very nice bits and loads bits where you would not want to intake too many breaths
Well. If you like city life, an apartment in the city centre is great. My friend has a penthouse and its amazing! The views are wonderful, plus she has a pool! However, it does get quite noisy at night, and especially at weekends.
I live near Manchester, on the outskirts of a relatively small town in the countryside. Well, the part where I live is in the countryside. The town centre is a scuzzy, dirty, rough area, but where Iive is lovely. We are surrounded by fields even though the house is on a main road. Personally, I would rather live down south, but there are worse places to be!
I lived in Manchester for years in Didsbury, one of the most expensive suburbs in the area. It is choked with traffic, crossing the road is dangerous. There is no where to park so people with pushchairs and wheelchairs find themselves in the road avoiding the car parked on the pavement.
Some bright spark thought that it would be a good idea to build dozens of bars, so on a Friday and Saturday night it attracts all the riff-raff from the poorer areas to p*ss and vomit in the doorways.
It has large semi derelict areas of immigrants living in what is best described as shanty towns. All the buildings are rotten and should be demolished but the council has no money.
If you are going to move into this area go to Altrincham.
Expensive houses mixed in with more affordable but a very green, pleasant town.
The shopping is very good from Tesco, Sainsbury's to specialized local shops. A tram link into Manchester should you wish to go to Selfridges etc. Plus the beautiful Cheshire countryside on your doorstep.
