What is the weather like in the northernmost cities of England in the summer?

I am planning on visiting Manchester in the middle of July. What clothes should I take with me? Light or warmer clothes?
Because I remember I went for two weeks to Plymouth in August and it was really cool and I didn't have any warm cloths with me!
