What is the condition of Creoles in Mauritius? |
Travel Info How is communalism/racism embedded in Mauritian society? Any xenophobia towards non Europeans there? Travel Tips I think that you are making some serious assumptions when stating that racial tensions are prevalent in Mauritius. Mauritians get along remarkably well together considering the many religions and races which have all come together on a very small island. Families often have more than one race and more than one religion within their family group. It is (in general) a very integrated society. As far as marriage is concerned there are Mauritian families that prefer that their young people marry within their own race and within their own religion (particularly the Indians, Muslims and Chinese). This is not unusual or unique to Mauritius. You will see this in most cultures or countries wherever you may be in the world. In politics I would say that some Mauritians tend to favor or lean towards politicians and leaders of their particular religion or culture. Once again, not unusual. There are also many people of mixed race and religion in Mauritius (metissage). I have a very good friend who is in this group. He is Christian. His sister is Muslim. Their race is a mix of French European, Muslim, Chinese and they don't even know what else. Having traveled and worked in several countries, I would have to say that Mauritius is not fraught with racial tension as you suppose. I have seen much worse racial tension within Europe. In my experience I find Mauritians very tolerant and kind in regards to other cultures. Others what are you talking about? That place is so nice SouthAfricans go there on holiday all the time and lets face it if any pale people would get hostility it is them. nope it is nice WTH r u talking about??????? Have u even been there to talk like that. Am mauritisn and there is no racsim issue thre. Of course as in every country there are some dumb ppl who don't like the other races but they keep to themsleves coz they know they won't be tolerated by the rest of us. What communalism are u talking about??? There is absolutely no xenophobia towards European. We are a very opened nation. PPl come from Australia, S.Africa, France, and more and not just on holidays they actually come to work there and send their kids to our schools. Creoles are certainly not ominated by the majority Indian Mauritians. On the contrary they are the loudest ppl in the country and the Indians don;t usually mess with them. So, everythin if gng on fine there. Mauritians stick within their racial groups. They rarely socialize or go to each other's place if they are not of the same race or faith. Call it communalism or casteism. Indian Mauritians who came as indentured labourers and worked more or less like slaves still maintain a so-called caste hierarchy however absurd it may sound. The Creoles are hardly liked as pointed out by Wiki betraying her open disgust of Creoles. But Mauritians are very overly sensitive and hate to be labelled as racists or communalists even though they are. The Creoles continue to be discriminated and considered dumb by the so- called smart races, Chinese and Indians whose arrogance and rudeness are sickening. I have lived in Mauritius for more than 30 years, speak fluent Creole over and above other languages. Having lived and educated abroad, I have a distinct perspective when I look back at my native island. I think that the Mauritians do not admit the inadmissible namely that the Indo Mauritian masters have supplanted the white colonials even though French Mauritians still rule the roost in the economy. Racism is latent .The facade of separate harmonism cracks when there are sensitive issues such as ethnic privileges . Then the ugliness surfaces in no time like the recent race riots between the Creoles and dominant Indian Mauritians or right now the Mohammedans clamouring their right to use loud speakers for their call to prayers even though the Supreme Court has prohibited it. Xenophobia does exist because underqualified locals are very insidiously harmful and crude to a handful of foreigners who are mostly the spouses of Mauritians. Such people openly display their prejudice and hostility. Mauritians are very narrow-minded and believe their place is some kind of paradise( "tiger of the Indian ocean") even though they depend heavily on foreign assistance for their economic survival. Racial tensions are always simmering below the superficial facade of harmony and oneness. The sense of mutual coexistence is an eye-wash. One more observation, the Asian Mauritians(Chinese and Indians) are very rude, uncouth and hot- tempered not to say haughty and self-important.In creole, zotte mari hypocrite et faiser meme zotte ene paquet ignorant et vaurien. |
