All my friends says its very expensive shopping in Mauritius? Any advisers?

Travel Tips
I woud l not say that it is expensive to shop in Mauritius but the hotel accommodation was certainly expensive. I went half board and soft drinks in the hotel were about 拢4 - 拢5.00 each. I was staying in the area called Le Morne in the southern most peninsular...

What I ended up doing was hiring a car... about 拢115.00 for 6 days and going to the local villages to stock up on soft drinks, snacks, etc which I kept in the minibar in my hotel room. Taxis are expensive in Mauritius so really consider hiring a car... most of the hotels seem to be based miles away from the villages.... The company that I used [ which were very reaosnably priced and arranged some tours for me and car hire with Hertz or Avis ] was called White Sands Tours who areone of the major tour company in Mauritus.

My son and I booked trips with them for:

a) An undersea walk - only about 拢25 each I think [ we drove up to the Grand Baie area ourselves - Mauritius is small so you can get from one part of the island to the other in about 4 hours... one word of caution though their road signs or lack thereof are atrocious!]

b) Cable Zip Riding which was absolutely brilliant [about 拢40 each] - travelling through the canopy of the trees on a cable with a harness of course [ and pretty damned high up as well it was]

c) They also organise sunset cruises with snacks/meals for about 拢27 - 拢40.00 each on catamarans of sail boats and trips to Chamarel seven coloured earth. I just drove there myself and paid the 拢7.00 or whatever it cost to get in...

We went to the capital city Port Louis where they hold a market twice a week [I cannot remember the days I'm afraid ] but we bought lots of really cheap things there - bags, clothing, arts and crafts and of course you can bargain if you wish to. They also have a lot of fake designer goods in the market.. LOL Port Louis was really quite nice...

Also if you can go up to Grand Baie in the far north of the country where they have great diving ...
Either way have a nice time... and DON'T FORGET TO BUY AQUA SHOES [you can get them on Ebay] as they have the deadly stone fish in the shallow waters in Mauritius!

Hi there, well Mauritius is kind of a neat little island. When I was there I bought some nice things, particularly clothing is rather inexpensive for brand items. Everything else is about the same as the US maybe a bit more expensive for food. It's very scenic there and you'll find a lot of things to do, like snorkeling, beaches and depending on your age some nice clubs. A couple things you'll find odd, lot's of dogs, roaming the land with no home. They're not dangerous, but it's kinda... wierd. Taxi drivers.... Taxi drivers go like 100 mph and will make you wish you never got into the cab. Hehe, have a good time.
I've been there
it depends on which country you are coming from. if you are from us or europe you will find it cheaper.
It all depends from which country you are. People from Europe and the USA will find everything cheaper owing to the exchange rate. Good bargains can be obtained in fairs and markets. At the bi-weekly fairs in Quatre Bornes, there are always a large number of tourists and they buy lots of things. It would, therefore, seem that they find clothes, etc cheaper than in their own countries.

Depending on which time of the year you go in, its not that expensive, iv been there 3 times and i love it to bits! If you need any tips let me know!
