Travel Info Which country is the best between mauritius and reunion isl? Travel Tips First of all, Reunion is not an independant country but an overseas department (state or province) of France. Their government is french, their money is the Euro just like in France. The people of Reunion are French citizens. Both Mauritius and Reunion are really nice. They are often called sister islands because of their proximity but also because of the similarities in their cultures, their people and the size of the islands. The best points of Mauritius for me are the people (who are very friendly), the cost of living, shopping, house rent, and food is much cheaper in Mauritius than Reunion. The beaches and watersports in Mauritius are nicer and also less expensive. On the negative side, the general population in Mauritius is poorer than that of Reunion. Also, there is almost double the population though Mauritius is slightly smaller. In general Mauritius tends to be more overcrowded and some areas can be dirty especially in the cities. (The tourist areas, hotels, etc. are nice and well-maintained.) Reunion is beautiful for its mountains, waterfalls, and the active volcano. The ocean is beautiful there as well, but more dangerous and watersports cannot be freely practiced without some danger and only in specific areas. The beaches are not super. Reunion has a pretty expensive cost of living as well, but is an interesting island to visit, very very beautiful in the mountain regions. I have lived on both of these islands and would live on either again. They both hold many good memories. For vacationing I would probably choose Mauritius for it's better value for the money, but depends on what one likes to do as well. In general I also find the Mauritians to be more open and friendly and the Reunionais more reserved especially toward foreigners. Others i am really more of a Sierra Leon person myself...but if I had to pick between those two, I'll go with Mauritius. scheyelles Mauritius |
