Many Mauritians leave to find work overseas which pays a lot better, so if you live like the locals you won't spend much. For a Mauritian living on a local salary, the cost of living is not cheap. For a person coming into Mauritius on a North American or Western European salary, the cost of living is cheap. Local restaurants and shops are very reasonable. Groceries, housing, clothing all very reasonable. About the only things that I would consider expensive in Mauritius are resort hotels, restaurants catering to tourists (usually in the big hotels) and the cost of vehicles due to high import taxes. I am a Canadian who has lived in Mauritius twice and have been back in and out of there several times since for work purposes. Beautiful country and beautiful people. Yes, it is, except for private medical care (which I experienced - it was awful) and motor vehicles. However, if you earn a salary in Mauritian Rupees, very little, if anything is cheap. Make sure you earn in Rands or an even stronger currency. Be aware that you are not allowed to own land in Mauritius if you are not a Mauritian citizen. 2shy is right! I'm a Mauritian and I can assure u that's its cheap here and also very beautiful! |
