I'm not going to start an argument with Vickie -Queen of All- because it's clear she hasn't been to Mazatlan and all she knows is through second hand information. I'm from Mazatlan, I live here, -check my info- and I'll try to explain everything you need to know. Firstly, Emerald Bay is located in the suburbs, about 10 miles from downtown, but that's part of the enchantment about this place. Everything around the hotel is quiet, clean and well kept. Guests can not be reached from the outside so you can be sure nobody is going to bother you trying to sell you something. I suggest you, once you're at the hotel, to use the green touristic buses that run near the hotel. The ticket costs 8 pesos, about 60 American cents and the full ride goes for almost 20 kilometers, about 14 miles. Also there is a large fleet of taxis right at the main hotel gates. They are thoughly controlled so you pay strictly what the authorities allow them to charge. Emerald Bay is located next to one of the most famous surfing spots in Mazatlan: Playa Bruja, or Cerritos (Little hills) as we, mazatlecans, call it locally. The official transportation buses and vans from the airport to the town are easily recognized by its yellow color and acronym ATAMSA written on them. The ride from airport to Emerald Bay takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Yes, we DO have peak hours AND rush traffic. Not too bad if you compare with YOUR peak hour conditions. Mazatlan is a place where most activities move slowly, except the traffic.
