How's life in Melbourne for foreigners ? |
Travel Info I am planning to move to melbourne as a skilled immigrant and I would like to know how life's there for foreigners.I love multicultural life and I am very open to new cultures.I try my best to adapt to anything in a culture i can adapt. Are people kind/friendly and open to foreigners friendship ? Travel Tips G'day, I am an immigrant and have been living in Melbourne for 16 years and never regret the move at all. I do not have Anglo-Saxon appearance, I speak English with an accent and I still feel like I am born in this country all along. My neighbors are combinations of immigrants and true blue Aussies and we are getting along very well. Racism will always be there in any country, but I definitely do not feel it here. Foreigners/immigrants can always have all kind of friends in Melbourne, but as a newcomer to the country, you will need to adjust your way of thinking a little and be open to differences. It will be a different lifestyle and different culture, but as you mentioned earlier, you do love diversity. Unfortunately most newcomers tend to stick with 'their own' and isolated themselves in the end. Now this is what I can say about Melbourne, it is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students. Yes, there will be some time needed for adjustments (not to mention loneliness & homesickness), but there will be helps and supports along the way since Australia is built by immigrants (yes, this include the Anglo-Saxons and the Aborigines). Helpful and caring... yes. Although how much is on the eye of the beholder. Some even bordering on the intrusion, but it's different story I suppose ;) As professional, you may have to work abt 40hrs/week, but some companies to have flexy and time in-lieu of overtime work. I certainly hope this helps. Welcome to Australia and enjoy. Others I think you are taking a good step in your life, moving as a skilled imigrant. I believe Melbourne is a good place. Most ppl are friendly, but there are always ppl who are not. Dont worry, just stay away from them I already answered your other questions. It looks like you are overly worried about coming to Australia. If you - as you said "very open to new cultures" and " try .....to adapt to anything in a culture" then you will be fine. Remember that in any society , you will come across both good and bad people. If you come across bad people, DON'T generalise and think that all Aussies are the same. Racism is everywhere in the world and you may come across it from time to time, but this is NOT what most Australians are like. When you come here - DON'T differentiate "aussies" being only white and others are "foreigners". Like in your other question, you use the phrase "all of Melbourne, not just aussies". WE ARE AUSSIES but we are NOT necessarily "white anglo-saxon". We are all aussies - black, white, yellow, pink. Hope this helps reduce some of your anxiety, mate! life is how you live it foreigners are from all over the world melbourne like any other city or town in australia have plenty of immigrants working here you will fit in fine - as long as you dont disrespect the australian laws |
